Popular Science: Advantages & Properties of 204 Cu Stainless Steel Balls
Grade 204 Cu is a high-manganese and low-nickel austenitic stainless steel. As a cost-effective alternative to 304 stainless steel, it adopts copper-nitrogen composite alloy modification technology, which has gained wide popularity in lightweight precision component manufacturing. Among stainless steel ball products, 204 Cu stainless steel balls own stable anti-rust performance, outstanding cold forming capacity and excellent fatigue resistance, which are widely applied to electronic components, precision valves, light industrial stirring parts and daily hardware. Many purchasers lack clear understanding of the material principle, core advantages and application limits of 204 Cu. Combined with the latest industrial material application data, this article systematically explains the material characteristics and comprehensive strengths of 204 Cu, and introduces standardized production and full physical & chemical testing capabilities of Changzhou Feige Steel Ball Co., Ltd.
In terms of basic chemical composition, 204 Cu greatly reduces nickel content and stabilizes austenite microstructure with synergistic manganese, copper and nitrogen elements. Its chromium content ranges from 15.5% to 17.5%, which guarantees basic anti-rust passive film performance. Copper content is limited to 2%~3.5%, serving as the core modified element of this grade. The maximum carbon content is controlled below 0.10%. Compared with ordinary 200-series stainless steel, it effectively reduces intergranular corrosion risks caused by high-temperature sensitization and greatly improves welding stability. Different from 304 stainless steel, the nickel content of 204 Cu is less than 3%, which greatly cuts raw material cost and meets the general trend of manufacturing cost reduction and efficiency improvement.
Benefiting from the special alloy formula, 204 Cu stainless steel balls own four irreplaceable core advantages. Firstly, it features excellent cold forming performance. Copper elements slow down the work hardening rate of steel effectively, so cracking and springback rarely occur during high-strength stamping and multi-stage spherical polishing, making high-precision smooth spherical processing easier and more controllable for precision steel ball mirror finishing. Secondly, it boasts outstanding anti-fatigue and anti-galling capacity. Copper optimizes surface lattice structure, effectively avoiding adhesive wear under reciprocating friction, so valve cores and rolling parts gain longer service life. Thirdly, its corrosion resistance under conventional environments is close to 304. It can work stably for a long time in atmospheric environment, fresh water and weak acid-base daily chemical media, and its salt spray resistance is far better than 201 and 202 stainless steel. Fourthly, it owns higher basic mechanical strength; its tensile strength under annealed state exceeds 304 steel, delivering stronger bearing and extrusion resistance under the same size. Objectively, without molybdenum addition, 204 Cu is not suitable for severe corrosive environments such as seawater and high-concentration chloride salt spray.
For practical material selection, 204 Cu is preferred for general seals, electronic contacts and ordinary mechanical rolling parts, while 316 series is still the priority choice for marine and strong chemical corrosion scenarios. With years of experience in stainless steel ball production, Feige Steel Ball provides customized 204 Cu stainless steel balls of all precision grades in mass production.
